My sculptures are “Familiar Strangers” with each one subtly reminding the viewer of someone they have seen, met or known. Hopefully, they leave the viewer trying to remember exactly who it is because their recognition is just beyond the mind’s recall. In creating them, they are composites drawn from the people that I have seen, met or known while traveling the world. They are familiar strangers.
As a person with a family history of Alzheimer’s, recalling faces and names is a dreaded fear. The pieces evoke a feeling of familarity for me which is comforting. Hopefully it makes the viewers of my art consciously wonder who they are. The key to creating each piece is to start with no particular face or feature in mind. Then simply begin adding and removing clay until a familiar stranger emerges. AND they always do…introducing themselves and the mystery of who they are and telling their story.

My journey as an artist, like the pieces I create, is unique. My life experiences and my health, yes health, helped to unearth my creativity. I primarily sculpts the human figure and I take what is the same about each of us, like faces, arms, legs etc., and makes us see what is unique and so clearly identifiable about all of us. By capturing the subtle differences in eyes, dimples, head shape, hair and hands, I am able to make each figure different
