Community Partner Spotlight: ImageNation Cinema Foundation – Amplifying Black Voices Through Cinema

The Harlem Fine Arts Show is proud to partner with ImageNation Cinema Foundation, a Harlem-based non-profit organization dedicated to promoting independent films and music that portray the global Black experience.

Empowering Through Media

Founded in 1997, ImageNation’s mission is to empower Black communities by fostering media equity, media literacy, and cross-cultural exchange. Through a variety of public programs, they aim to challenge stereotypes and highlight the rich humanity of Pan-African people worldwide.

A Legacy of Impact

Over the years, ImageNation has hosted numerous film screenings, live music performances, and cultural events, collaborating with renowned institutions such as the Apollo Theater, the Film Society of Lincoln Center, and the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. Their international reach extends to South Africa, Scotland, and Canada, while domestically they have presented programs at Harvard University, MASS MoCA, and various cities across the U.S.

A Platform for Prominent Voices

ImageNation’s RAW SPACE program, prior to the pandemic, served as a dynamic hub for independent film screenings, art exhibitions, and live music performances, often featuring appearances by leading filmmakers like Spike Lee, Lee Daniels, Stanley Nelson, and Ava DuVernay.

Collaboration & Advocacy

ImageNation is also a founding partner of AFFRM, a national film distribution collective established by Ava DuVernay, further demonstrating their commitment to amplifying Black voices in the film industry.

Shared Vision

ImageNation’s dedication to showcasing the richness and diversity of the Black experience aligns seamlessly with the Harlem Fine Arts Show’s mission of celebrating Black artistry. Together, we believe in the transformative power of art and media to foster understanding, inspire dialogue, and create a more just and equitable world.
