Harlem Week, the vibrant summer festival that has become synonymous with the spirit of Harlem, marks its 50th anniversary this year. From its humble beginnings as a one-day event in 1974, Harlem Week has blossomed into a two-week extravaganza that celebrates the rich tapestry of this iconic New York City neighborhood.
Honoring a Legacy of Revitalization
The festival’s genesis can be traced back to the vision of Hon. Percy Sutton, then Manhattan Borough President. Recognizing the economic hardships facing Harlem in the 1970s, Sutton sought to create an event that would uplift the community’s spirit and foster a sense of unity.
Under the leadership of Lloyd Williams and a dedicated team from Blackfrica Promotions, the first Harlem Day was born. The resounding success of this initial event paved the way for what would become an annual tradition, showcasing the best of Harlem’s culture, talent, and resilience.
A Festival of Unparalleled Diversity
Today, Harlem Week offers a kaleidoscope of experiences for residents and visitors alike. From August 3rd to 18th, more than 100 family-friendly events will unfold, transforming 135th Street into a bustling hub of activity. Live music will fill the air from four stages, while international food vendors tantalize taste buds with their diverse culinary offerings.
The festival’s extensive program also includes markets showcasing local artisans, thought-provoking film screenings, a 5K run, a spelling bee, a climate conference, and even a job fair. There truly is something for everyone at Harlem Week!

As this year’s festival reaches its crescendo, Harlem Week will honor Tony Award-winning Broadway star Kara Young, director Kenny Leon, and actor Ruben Santiago-Hudson for their contributions to the arts.
