HFAS Community Partner Spotlight: Planet Harlem by Paul Deo

A Cultural Touchstone Celebrates its 12th Anniversary

The Harlem Fine Arts Show is proud to shine a spotlight on a remarkable community partner: Planet Harlem. This monumental mixed-media mural, a vibrant tribute to the cultural dynamism of Harlem, will mark its 12th anniversary on Thursday, October 24th, 2024, with a special celebration at 7 PM.

Created by acclaimed artist Paul Deo, a New Orleans native who relocated to Harlem following Hurricane Katrina, Planet Harlem has become an iconic landmark. Strategically positioned at the intersection of 126th Street and Malcolm X Boulevard, the mural serves as a visual chronicle of Harlem’s rich history and enduring spirit.

Deo’s artistic journey, nurtured from a young age by his aunt and inspired by the legendary performers he witnessed at the Apollo Theater, culminated in this extraordinary work of public art. Adorned with Swarovski crystals, mirrors, 24k gold leaf, and precious stones, Planet Harlem radiates the brilliance of the cultural icons it portrays, including luminaries such as James Brown, Aretha Franklin, Langston Hughes, and Zora Neale Hurston.

Beyond its aesthetic splendor, Planet Harlem serves as a powerful educational tool, weaving together the narratives of Harlem’s past and present. It has been integrated into school curriculums, featured in numerous media productions, and inspired Deo’s innovative digital project, Harlem Anime, which brings the mural’s figures to life through 3D avatars.
