Harlem Renaissance 2.0 Banners: A Momentous Celebration and Reflection

The Gatekeepers Collective was honored to host the unveiling of the TGC’s Harlem Renaissance 2.0 Banners on September 7th. The event proved to be a momentous occasion, marked by both celebration and reflection on the profound contributions of SGLBTQ+ trailblazers.

As the banners were revealed, showcasing the striking portraits of James Baldwin, Lorraine Hansberry, Bayard Rustin, Barbara Jordan, and Audre Lorde, the atmosphere was charged with emotion and pride. The captivating performances brought the words and legacies of these icons to life, reminding us of their unwavering strength and the indelible mark they left on society.

Dr. John-Martin Green’s eloquent address underscored the importance of recognizing the significant contributions of SGLBTQ+ African Americans, fostering inclusivity, and challenging stigma.

The banners now adorn 125th Street, transforming it into a vibrant corridor that celebrates diversity and resilience. They stand as a powerful testament to the SGLBTQ+ community’s integral role in shaping the cultural tapestry of Harlem and the nation.

We encourage you to visit 125th Street between Morningside Avenue and 12th Avenue to witness this impactful installation.
